About the Concert

Late Romanticism, Expressionism, Modernism - the musical Vienna around the year 1900 could hardly have been more contrasting. In Webern's idyll "Im Sommerwind," one can almost romantically hear the Vienna Woods rustling. In the evening's most popular work, Richard Strauss's "Alpine Symphony," expressiveness and romanticism combine to create a unique musical language. For this, Strauss employs a huge orchestra with nearly 120 musicians, a wind machine, cowbells, and even a thunder sheet - real nature cinema in the concert hall! The audience can experience a complete alpine hike, including a sunrise, mountain panorama, and dramatic thunderstorm. However, it is not a triumphal march; in the end, nature remains greater than man. In the middle of the concert, we pause and listen to the high vocal artistry of Christian Gerhaher - with songs by Franz Schubert in orchestral arrangements.
