Who doesn't know the love story of Romeo and Juliet? Bernstein's "West Side Story" is also about two young people whose love ends tragically. The special thing here is, of course, the music. Leonard Bernstein combined various jazz movements, classical opera and Latin American dance music to create a rousing musical sequence that still barely keeps us in our seats. When Gershwin spent two months in Paris in 1928, he was fascinated by the morbidly chilly atmosphere of Montmartre, the rush hour on the Champs-Élysées and marveled at the imposing Eiffel Tower. But he is actually homesick for New York, and that is exactly what the music in "An American in Paris" is about. A ragtime portrays the American. A blues in the middle section for his melancholy. But fortunately, the American meets a fellow countryman. The two of them whistle at the cancan-dancing Paris with a casually cool Charleston
