About the Concert

In November 1938, Elfriede and Otto Silbermann find themselves on the edge of their world. Bewilderment and silent agreements accompany their last hours together in their homeland. Elfriede desperately fights to salvage what can still be saved, while her Jewish husband Otto rushes from station to station in flight. However, their son still dreams of a better life in Paris. A brother-in-law who changes with the wind, and the harsh reality of persecution and betrayal, shape their days. In a world where antisemitism and the threat to democratic values are once again becoming prominent, "The Traveler" tells a poignant tale of escape and displacement, of lost fundamental rights and the powerlessness of love. This powerful melodrama for speakers, soloists, choir, orchestra, and multimedia not only sheds light on the dark sides of violence and injustice but also on the hope, longing, and humanity that still find their place even in the greatest despair. As part of the commemorative year "80 years since the end of World War II".

Biographies

Gergely Madaras

Hungarian conductor Gergely Madaras has been Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège in Belgium since 2019. He was trained as a flautist, violinist, composer and conductor, giving him a deep insight into the workings of an orchestra and its repertoire. He recently made his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Tokyo and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, among others. He has also appeared at opera houses such as La Monnaie Brussels, the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Hungarian State Opera.

Ulrich Noethen

Ulrich Noethen is one of the leading German character actors in film and television. After initially appearing on many German theater stages, he had his breakthrough in the film business in 1997 with the role of singer Harry Frommermann in “Comedian Harmonists”. Since then, he has appeared regularly in film and TV and has received numerous awards. He has also made a name for himself as a speaker and enjoys working in musical contexts – as he does in the melodrama “The Traveler”.

Birgit Minichmayr

Austrian actress Birgit Minichmayr was already hired during her studies at the famous Burgtheater in Vienna. Later, she was also part of the ensembles of the Berlin Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz and the Munich Residenztheater, but in 2019 she went back to Vienna. She is also highly successful in TV and film, having appeared in “Everyone Else”, “The White Ribbon” and “Perfume – The Story of a Murderer”, among others. No less brilliant are her performances as a singer and speaker.

Kangyoon Shine Lee

The lyric tenor Kangyoon Shine Lee comes from South Korea and has been a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble since 2024/25, where he had previously fulfilled several guest contracts. There he can be heard in roles such as Tamino in “The Magic Flute” or Conte Almaviva in “Il barbiere di Siviglia.” In 2024, the multiple competition winner completed his studies at the HfM Hanns Eisler in Berlin with the concert exam. In 2023, he performed with the Dresden Philharmonic for the first time, in Lera Auerbach's 6th symphony.

Julian Orlishausen

Baritone Julian Orlishausen was formerly a member of the Windsbacher Knabenchor, where he received his basic musical training. After his studies in Würzburg, he made his debut at the Leipzig Opera and was immediately invited to many theaters in Germany and Austria. Since 2018/19 he has been a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, where his roles have included Renato in "Un ballo in maschera", Germont in "La Traviata" and the title role in Don Giovanni

Philharmonischer Chor Dresden

The Dresden Philharmonic Choir has been active for over 55 years, since it was founded in 1967 on the initiative of Kurt Masur. The approximately 70 singers perform the demanding choral work in their free time. They give concerts with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of the respective chief and guest conductors, collaborate with other choirs and orchestras and perform a cappella programs in and outside of Dresden. Iris Geißler has led the ensemble since October 2022.

kammerchor cantamus

The Kammerchor CANTAMUS Dresden was founded in 1995. Its singers have a solid musical education, with many of the male choristers being able to draw on many years of experience from their membership in the Dresden Kreuzchor. Their warm, clear sound and stylistically confident program variety make them an ensemble that is enthusiastically received everywhere. They give many concerts in Dresden and the surrounding area, but also travel abroad every now and then.
