About the Concert

Duration: approx. 1 hr 30 mins including intermission

Elgar's Overture "In the South" combines Italian landscape impressions with late romantic splendor: passionate, colorful, rhythmically pulsating and full of vastness, elegance, and noble melancholy. In the south, we also encounter Joaquín Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto; its title refers to the famous gardens of Aranjuez. The composer brilliantly captured their atmosphere. The second, slow movement is one of the most well-known pieces in classical music. Elgar's Enigma Variations, with each of its 14 movements dedicated to a friend of Elgar, are also part of the classical standard repertoire. The most famous is certainly "Nimrod," which is often played at ceremonial events and has been frequently used in film soundtracks, including in "The War" with Cate Blanchett and in "Australia" with Nicole Kidman.

Biographies

Adam Hickox

The Young Brit Adam Hickox began his conducting career as assistant to Lahav Shani with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and as Chief Conductor of the Glyndebourne Sinfonia. Since summer 2025, he has been Chief Conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra in Norway, but also presents his expressive interpretations in cities such as Oslo, London and Berlin. He is also receiving an increasing number of international invitations in the opera field, e. g. from the Dutch National Opera and the Hamburg State Opera.

Pablo Sainz Villegas

He is the most virtuosic guitarist of his generation and acts as a key ambassador for Spanish music around the world: Pablo Sainz-Villegas is described in superlatives and has brought the guitar back to the leading concert halls as a solo instrument. He regularly performs world premieres of chamber music and symphonic works; John Williams has already written two pieces for him. For the Spanish-born musician, who has lived in the USA for many years, social engagement is essential.
