A revolutionary as director of the Paris Conservatoire, unheard of! When Gabriel Fauré radically changed the curriculum of France's most venerable musical institution around 1900 and allowed the music of Wagner to be studied, he had a lot of people against him. He was not at all partisan, but simply open to all musical directions. And that's how he composed himself: neither completely traditional nor completely modern, he was only interested in quality. And the qualities of his music are amply demonstrated in this concert. Flowing melodies, French esprit and always a door open to the unexpected.

Biographies

Valda Wilson

Sydney-born soprano Valda Wilson has been a member of the ensemble at the Saarländisches Staatstheater since 2017/18, where she could be heard as Suor Angelica in Puccini's opera of the same name in 2023/24 and as Aida in Verdi's masterpiece of the same name in 2024/25. At the beginning of her career, she was a member of the Semperoper's Young Ensemble. On the concert stage, she can often be heard in Beethoven's Ninth Symphony or with Mahler songs, but also in opera galas or with an excursion into film music.

Christoph Berner

Christoph Berner is one of Austria's leading pianists and has received numerous awards over the course of his long career. He often performs as a soloist with orchestras, but also as a Lied accompanist, for example with tenor Werner Güra, or as a chamber music partner for instrumentalists or ensembles. He has been a professor of vocal accompaniment and Lied interpretation at the Zurich University of the Arts since 2014.

Fabian Dirr

1st Principal Clarinet

Fabian Dirr was born in Erlangen and began his musical education at the age of six. He was already a prize-winner in several competitions before he began his studies at the Hanover University of Music and Drama with Hans Deinzer, which he completed as a master student.

Charlotte Thiele

Violin

Young violinist Charlotte Thiele from Dresden appreciates versatility and extraordinary concert formats. She performs as a violin soloist with orchestras, and occasionally also as a duo with her brother, the cellist Friedrich Thiele. She also plays in chamber music formations and as guest concertmaster with ensembles such as the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper Berlin or the Kammerakademie Potsdam. Since the 2023/24 season she is a member of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Academy of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden as 1st concertmaster.

Adela Bratu

Assistant Principal 2nd Violin

Acclaimed for the “intimate beauty” of her playing “with which she charmed” the audience (Dresdner Neueste Nachrichten), Adela Bratu started her musical journey on the advice of her kindergarten teacher. After passing the entrance examination at the music high school of her home city – the Carmen Sylva College of Ploiesti, Adela received her first violin lesson at the age of six. Soon after, she began to succeed in various national and international competitions, such as the Paul Constantinescu Competition, W.A. Mozart Competition, Garabet Avachian Competition, and the National Music Olympics.

Razvan Popescu

1st Principal Double Bass

Răzvan Popescu was born in Bucharest (Romania) in 1987. At the age of seven, he began his training at the local music high school, first as a violinist, before switching to the double bass at the age of 16.

Hans Christian Martin

Hans Christian Martin was born in Zwickau and studied church music in Dresden and Weimar. Since 2020, he has been cantor and organist at the Silbermann organ Crostau. In his artistic career to date, his long-standing collaboration with the conductor Helmuth Rilling has been particularly influential. Hans Christian Martin's concert activities regularly take him to the Thomaskirche Leipzig, the Liederhalle Stuttgart, the Dresden Frauenkirche, the Leipzig Bach Festival and the Thuringia Bach Festival, among others.

Freies Ensemble Dresden

The Freies Ensemble Dresden was founded on the occasion of a performance of Schönberg's “Pierrot Lunaire” at a benefit concert in 2000. This start immediately revealed the ensemble's profile: free from the expectations of the mainstream, with the highest artistic quality and lively idealism, the Dresden musicians have been presenting well-thought-out programs in their hometown and far beyond ever since.
