About the Concert

With a large orchestra, one can tell whole stories. One of the greatest musical storytellers was undoubtedly Igor Stravinsky. The sounds and rhythms conjured by him caused scandals more than 100 years ago - today, on the other hand, they inspire us to create grand images like in the cinema. This is also the case with the tale of the "Firebird" with all its sophisticated colors and instruments: eerie and dark sounds for the immortal sorcerer Kashchey, bright colors for the Firebird, and folkloric music for the prince and princess. Unusual orchestral instruments such as tambourine and xylophone are also included.

Biographies

Kahchun Wong

First Guest Conductor

Kahchun Wong has been Principal Conductor of the Hallé in Manchester since 2024/25, he also holds the same position with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra and is Principal Guest Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic. The Singapore-born conductor is internationally acclaimed for his electrifying stage presence and his thoughtful exploration of Eastern and Western artistic legacies. Winning the 2016 Mahler Competition opened the doors to the top international orchestras for him.

Malte Arkona

The presenter, actor and voice actor Malte Arkona is known to many viewers from television, but is also one of the most sought-after music educators in the German-speaking world. He has been a regular stage partner of the Dresden Philharmonic in this capacity for many years and has been presenting its new "Best of Classics" series, which he co-designed, since the 2024/25 season. He also directs video clips for the orchestra, in which he can also be seen himself.

Magdalena Brouwer

Magdalena Brouwer has not only played the violin and horn excellently since a very young age and has already performed with youth orchestras at the Vienna Musikverein, the Berlin Philharmonic and the German National Youth Orchestra, but she also knows a lot about music history and loves to get other young people inspired by it as well. In 2023, aged only 16, she presented for the first time school concerts of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra with Malte Arkona and will do so again in the 2025/26 season.

Michael Kube

Concept

Michael Kube is a passionate music educator and has been conceiving the school and family concert series "phil zu entdecken" for the Dresden Philharmonic since the 2015/16 season. He also works as an editor and consultant, is a juror for the Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, and a university lecturer in music history, musicology and music education.
