About the Concert
Contemporary music often struggles. The Third Symphony of the Polish composer Górecki initially received criticism. However, excerpts from it became pop hits in the USA and landed on the charts. Yet, its theme is quite serious: Górecki wrote the music and lyrics in reference to World War II and particularly the suffering in concentration camps. In contrast, the piano concerto, which brought international fame to the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, exudes a completely different mood. In it, the young composer had found the colors of his homeland. In the first movement, one can almost hear the freshness and the special light of the North. A showcase piece for Boris Giltburg, who can bring all these colors to life.
The concerts on May 10th and 11th are part of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and will also be performed in Wrocław. They continue the collaboration between the Dresden Philharmonic and the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic.
Program
Edvard Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16
Henryk Górecki Symphony No. 3 "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs"
At the start of the 2024/25 season, Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański will take up his position as Chief Conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra. He has also been Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana since 2022. He has recently made his debuts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He toured Europe with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the fall of 2023.
Moscow-born Israeli pianist Boris Giltburg is praised worldwide as an extremely sensitive, empathetic and captivating performer, and he appears each season with a wide variety of repertoire. He demonstrates this again in the 2025/26 season, when he – as Artist in Residence of the Dresden Philharmonic – performs a solo recital at the Kulturpalast, as well as four concerts with the orchestra in Dresden and two concerts on tour with works by Beethoven, Mozart, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Ravel and Gershwin.
That is the claim of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra stands for concerts at the highest artistic level, musical education for all ages and looking beyond the musical horizon. Guest performances on almost every continent and collaborations with guests from all over the world have established the reputation of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the international classical music world.
