“Shared spirit”, “astonishing expressive maturity”, “moments that get under your skin” - the press can't stop praising the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester's concerts. Now the young musicians are back in Dresden, this time in our concert hall and with a program that packs a punch: Beethoven's overtures to “Fidelio” and the never-composed opera “Coriolan” are as gripping as they are rousing. And then things really get down to business with Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony, which was composed in the middle of the Second World War. Dramatic and at the same time ironically subtle. Shostakovich did not want to write music that glorified war and here he found artistic ways to superficially fulfill Stalin's expectations and at the same time cleverly undermine them.
