About the Concert

Yevhen Stankovych is considered one of the most important living Ukrainian composers. His music is often understood today as the cultural voice of Ukraine and deliberately opens a program that highlights the admonishing and unifying power of music. When Bohuslav Martinů wrote his Double Concerto in 1938, he already knew what would happen to his homeland Czechia and the rest of Europe. The political threat is clearly palpable in his work and also refers to his personal fate: from this point on, a return to his homeland was impossible for him, so he went into exile in the USA and only returned to Europe in the 1950s. Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen also bear witness to war and destruction and are marked by deep sorrow. Strauss wrote this music shortly after the end of World War II in the face of the destruction of his homeland.

Natalia Ponomarchuk

Natalia Ponomarchuk is one of the best-known conductors of her native Ukraine. She has been Principal Conductor of the Kyiv Chamber Orchestra since 2018. She now lives in London but returns regularly to Kyiv to conduct. Previously, she held several positions with other orchestras in Ukraine. As a sought-after guest conductor, she leads ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra.

Philharmonisches Kammerorchester

The Philharmonische Kammerorchester Dresden is one of the most traditional chamber music ensembles in Dresden. Since its founding in 1969 by members of the Dresden Philharmonic, it has become an established part of the city's musical life and beyond. The joy of making music, a special sense of sound and imaginative programming inspire audiences at concerts in Germany and abroad. The orchestra members are particularly committed to designing children's and youth concerts.
