Yevhen Stankovych is considered one of the most important living Ukrainian composers. His music is often understood today as the cultural voice of Ukraine and deliberately opens a program that highlights the admonishing and unifying power of music. When Bohuslav Martinů wrote his Double Concerto in 1938, he already knew what would happen to his homeland Czechia and the rest of Europe. The political threat is clearly palpable in his work and also refers to his personal fate: from this point on, a return to his homeland was impossible for him, so he went into exile in the USA and only returned to Europe in the 1950s. Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen also bear witness to war and destruction and are marked by deep sorrow. Strauss wrote this music shortly after the end of World War II in the face of the destruction of his homeland.Jewhen Stankowytsch
