About the Concert

More famous than Beethoven's Ninth? Yes, in the 19th century, the use of choir in Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang" was more popular than the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's last symphony. To this day, "The night is past, but the day is at hand" is considered one of the most beautiful romantic choral pieces ever. But comparisons are usually flawed, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy did not need to outdo Beethoven. His work, which he created in 1840 for the anniversary of "400 years of the invention of the printing press" for the book city of Leipzig, has its own musical qualities and combines tradition and innovation in a special way. The two other works that the Dresdner Kreuzchor and Dresdner Philharmonie will perform together on this evening also give the choir, soloists, and orchestra their own unique tasks. An opportunity for both to showcase their special qualities.
