About the Concert
Gustav Mahler almost always composed based on his own mood. So one would expect that he wrote his Sixth Symphony in a rather somber mood, as it is called the "Tragic". But precisely in the summer of 1903, he was feeling great! Perhaps one should keep that in mind when listening to the many march-like sections of the work and the cowbells that remind one of carefree walks in the mountains. The music does have tragic elements, and with the hammer blows in the finale, we believe ourselves to be in a battle between the good and evil forces that determine our lives...
Cristian Măcelaru is Music Director Designate of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He is also Music Director of the Orchestre National de France, among others, and will conclude his time as Chief Conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra in the 2024/25 season. Initially successful as a violinist, he began his international conducting career in 2012 as a stand-in for Pierre Boulez in Chicago. In the summer of 2024, 1.5 billion people watched him conduct the Olympic anthem at the opening ceremony of the Games in Paris.
That is the claim of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra stands for concerts at the highest artistic level, musical education for all ages and looking beyond the musical horizon. Guest performances on almost every continent and collaborations with guests from all over the world have established the reputation of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the international classical music world.
