About the Concert

The Fifth Symphony by Dmitri Shostakovich was composed in 1937 during a time of great personal and political tension. After facing criticism of his music from the Soviet government, he had to prove himself once again - and created a work that impressed both the regime and deeply moved his audience. Full of tragedy, hope, and subtle irony, Shostakovich's symphony reflects his courage and genius. Today, in this gripping masterpiece, one can hear the power of a composer who used music as the language of the soul. Equally captivating is the Violin Concerto by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Nordic expanses, passionate melodies, and virtuosic solos merge into an unparalleled auditory experience. The violin tells tales of longing and adventure, of quiet moments and powerful outbursts. This concerto is a celebration for the senses - captivating, touching, and unforgettable.

Biographies

Krzysztof Urbański

At the start of the 2024/25 season, Polish conductor Krzysztof Urbański will take up his position as Chief Conductor of the Bern Symphony Orchestra. He has also been Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana since 2022. He has recently made his debuts with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He toured Europe with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the fall of 2023.

Alina Ibragimova

Violinist Alina Ibragimova is known for her wide-ranging repertoire and the immediate beauty of her tone. She plays music from the Baroque to contemporary music on both historical and modern instruments. She performs as a soloist with major orchestras in Europe, the United States and Asia, but also gives many recitals in well-known concert halls such as the Wigmore Hall and the Concertgebouw. She is a founding member of the Chiaroscuro Quartet, an ensemble for historical performance practice.
