About the Concert

The piano sonatas by Beethoven are profound explorations of the great themes of music, life, and human existence. They are among the greatest masterpieces in the history of music and reflect both his personal journey and the evolution of music. For his concert, Víkingur Ólafsson has chosen Sonatas No. 27 and 30. The latter is considered one of the summit works of piano literature. It combines clarity and depth, and especially the second movement, a meditative Adagio, allows space for intimate reflection, while the finale, with its varying themes, showcases Beethoven's creativity. Beethoven's great predecessor, Johann Sebastian Bach, and one of his famous successors, Franz Schubert, are also featured in the program with other works, highlighting significant events in European piano music. Invited by the Dresden Philharmonic in cooperation with DK Deutsche Klassik.

Víkingur Ólafsson

For many years, Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson has been making a name for himself with his stunning performances. And he is not afraid to take on very special projects. For example, he dedicated his 2023/24 season solely to Bach's "Goldberg Variations", which he performed 88 times in a row around the world. Starting in the autumn of 2025, the Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist will tour Europe and North America with his new program, which he has built around Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 30, Op. 109.
