Albert Pesendorfer

Austrian bass Albert Pesendorfer is one of the most sought-after singers of German repertoire, which he has performed at major theaters and festivals all over the world. His stylistic versatility also leads to much acclaim in Italian and Slavic roles. Highlights of his 2024/25 season include Verdi’s Banco ("Macbeth") with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Hunding ("Die Walküre") at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Baron Ochs ("Der Rosenkavalier") with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra as well as Graf Waldner ("Arabella") and Veit Pogner ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg") at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In the past seasons he performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin roles like Pastor Baltzer in Detlev Glanert’s "Oceane", König Heinrich ("Lohengrin"), Veit Pogner ("Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg"), Fasolt ("Das Rheingold"), Hagen ("Götterdämmerung"), Rocco ("Fidelio"), Graf Waldner ("Arabella") and in Vienna – at the Staatsoper and the Volksoper – Baron Ochs ("Der Rosenkavalier"), Boris ("Boris Godunov"), Daland ("Der fliegende Holländer") and Hagen. Further recent projects include a new production as König Marke ("Tristan und Isolde") in Seville, a guest performance of the Deutsche Oper Berlin at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland as Landgraf Hermann ("Tannhäuser"), his role debut as Wotan ("Rheingold") in Erfurt, as well as Hagen at the International May Festival of the Staatstheater Wiesbaden and at the Wagner Days in Budapest.

Albert Pesendorfer studied voice and flute in Linz and Vienna. Permanent engagements have taken him to the Theater Erfurt, the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck, the Staatsoper Hannover and the Deutsche Oper Berlin. His operatic repertoire includes over 70 roles, predominantly those of the German Wagnerian repertoire such as Hans Sachs, Veit Pogner, Landgraf Hermann, Gurnemanz, König Heinrich, König Marke, Fasolt, Hunding and Hagen or those of the Italian repertoire such as Filippo II, Zaccaria, Sparafucile and Banco.

Guest appearances have led him to renowned German and international stages performing the major bass roles, including the Staatsoper Hannover, the Kölner Oper, the Hamburgische Staatsoper, the Semperoper Dresden, the Vlaamse Opera Antwerp, the Zurich Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Wiener Volksoper, the Theater an der Wien, the National Opera Tokyo, the Müpa Festival Budapest and the Bregenz and Bayreuth Festivals.

On the concert stage the singer has appeared at the Musikverein Wien, the Konzerthaus Wien, the Berliner Philharmonie, the Barbican Hall in London, as well as in Japan and the USA.

Albert Pesendorfer has also been a professor of voice at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2015.
