Jan Rozehnal graduated from the conservatory in Kroměříž and the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno under O. Trhlík and L. Mátl.
He worked as a conductor at the South Bohemian Theatre Opera in České Budějovice and later as the main choirmaster of the Brno Philharmonic Choir. He also worked with the Prague Philharmonic Choir, directed the Moravian Teachers‘ Singers’ Association and the Brno Youth Music Choir. From 1990 to 2003, he was the main choirmaster of the Slovak Philharmonic Choir, with which he rehearsed many interesting compositions (e.g. Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and Verdi's Othello for co-operation with Claudio Abbado, Mahler's 8th Symphony, Beethoven's Fidelio, Schoenberg's Moses and Aaron and many others). With the Slovak Philharmonic Choir he has made recordings for renowned music labels (Decca, Deutsche Gramophon, Discovery, Harmonia Mundi, Marco Polo, Naxos, NBC and others) and has toured abroad with the choir in almost all European countries,
Israel and Japan). In 1994 he initiated the founding of the vocal ensemble for the interpretation of early music Camerata Bratislava. The recordings of masses by
J. Gallus-Handl and Kryštof Harant received the Diapason DʼOr prize from the French review and the prize of the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic.
Between 2008 and 2023 he worked as a choirmaster and conductor in Germany, first in Koblenz, later in Frankfurt and in Halberstadt.
Since the 2023/2024 season, he returned as choirmaster of the Slovak Philharmonic Choir.
