Born in Dresden in 1958, Rainer Promnitz received his musical education in Dresden from 1966, first at the Special School of Music, and from 1975 at the Academy of Music in the subjects of violoncello, composition and chamber music. In the year of his graduation in 1980 he became a member of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1988/89 he was a master student in composition at the Berlin Academy of Arts.
In addition, Rainer Promnitz also performs as a chamber musician, partly with his own compositions. His compositional oeuvre is extensive and wide-ranging: Thus, in addition to orchestral works, he has also created numerous compositions for chamber ensembles, including, among others, to sculptures by Ernst Barlach, which have been and will be performed in chamber concerts of the Dresden Philharmonic, the Friends of the Dresden Philharmonic, as part of the "Encounter of the Arts" in Dresden museums, or at festivals of contemporary music. In addition, he organizes his own thematic concerts (e.g. "Music - Painting" and "Music & Film") and is involved in musical education projects, e.g. with the youth orchestra of the Heinrich Schütz Conservatory Dresden.
