The Swiss tenor and Bach Prize winner Raphael Höhn is a highly sought-after singer in the field of baroque music. He is praised by the international press for his beautiful timbre with great splendour, the purest intonation, exemplary diction and vocalisation (Scherzo/Spain for a St Matthew Passion in the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, 2023), among other things.
He is a regular guest at major European concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the KKL Lucerne, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona. He works with renowned ensembles and orchestras such as the Bachstiftung St. Gallen, the Freiburger Barockorchester, Vox Luminis, the Nederlandse Bachvereniging, the Dresdner Philharmonie and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
His broad repertoire ranges from the Renaissance to contemporary music. Lied singing is very important to him. In addition to the great cycles such as Schubert's "Winterreise" or Schumann's "Dichterliebe", he also explores lesser-known works. He recently released the CD "Heimat", on which he and his accompanist Shin Hwang present numerous songs by the Swiss composer Friedrich Theodor Fröhlich as world premiere recordings.
He gained his first singing experience as an alto soloist with the Zurich Boys' Choir. During his vocal studies at the Zurich University of the Arts and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, he honed his skills in classical singing and early music with Scot Weir, Rita Dams, Michael Chance, Peter Kooij and Jill Feldman. He also attended masterclasses with Andreas Scholl, Gerd Türk, Peter Harvey and Jean-Paul Fouchécourt, among others. He received further important musical inspiration from conductors such as Frans Bruggen, Laurence Cummings, Justin Doyle, Simon Gaudens, Howard Griffiths, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Ton Koopman, Vàclav Luks, Rudolf Lutz, Andrea Marcon and Jos van Veldhoven.
In the current 2023/24 season, Raphael Höhn will once again be performing all of Johann Sebastian Bach's major works. He will go on tour with the Nederlandse Bachverening in the St Matthew Passion and with the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Mass in B minor. At the Bach Festival in Leipzig he will sing the Evangelist in the St John Passion and at the end of the year the Christmas Oratorio with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra and the Magnificat with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
