British mezzo-soprano/contralto Stephanie Wake-Edwards, called "richly expressive" by The Times, is a winner of the Concours Bordeaux Médoc Lyrique, a graduate of the prestigious Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Ballet and Opera, Covent Garden, England’s representative for the Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and a current ensemble member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

 

Her performances of the 2025/26 season at Deutsche Oper Berlin include Hermia in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream", Third Lady in "Die Zauberflöte", Prince Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus", Mary in "Der fliegende Holländer", La Badessa in "Suor Angelica", Cornelia in "Giulio Cesare", Barbara in "Violanta", Flosshilde in "Götterdämmerung", Grimgerde in "Die Walküre", Maddalena in "Rigoletto", Erste Magd in "Elektra", Eine Stimme in "Parsifal", and Widow Browe in "Csar and Carpenter". Elsewhere, Stephanie Wake-Edwards will appear with Dresdner Philharmonie and Sir Donald Runnicles as Erste Magd in "Elektra", and join Glyndebourne Festival Opera as Hermia in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream".

 

Recent operatic highlights include Polina in "Queen of Spades" and Hermia in "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" for Garsington Opera, the latter featuring in a concert performance as part of the BBC Proms; Third Lady in "Die Zauberflöte" with English National Opera; Third Nymph in "Rusalka" at the Bayerische Staatsoper; Ino in a new production of "Semele" at Glyndebourne Festival Opera; Anna in Weill’s "The Seven Deadly Sins" at the Teatro Colón in Argentina; and Javotte in "Manon" with Staatsoper Hamburg. Since becoming a member of the Deutsche Oper Berlin ensemble in 2024, Stephanie Wake Edwards has also performed the title role in "Carmen", La Marchesa Melibea in "Il viaggio a Reims", the Page in "Salome", and more. While at the Royal Ballet and Opera, she performed Anna in Weill’s "The Seven Deadly Sins", filmed for streaming release, Flora in "La traviata" and Third Lady in "Die Zauberflöte".

 

In concert, she has performed Handel’s "Messiah" with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra; Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with Semyon Bychkov at the Royal Festival Hall in London; Vivaldi’s Stabat Mater at the Grafenegg Festival in Austria; "Messiah" in Dubai with the Astana Symphony Orchestra, as well as recitals at Wigmore Hall, Opéra national de Bordeaux and Oxford Lieder Festival.

 

Stephanie Wake-Edwards recently recorded selections of Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) at the Mendelssohn house in Leipzig, including some works never before recorded. She graduated from the University of York with a BA in Sociology with Social Psychology followed by a Masters Degree in Vocal Studies with Alex Ashworth at the Royal Academy of Music, where she is an Associate.
