Prof. Dr Tiago de Oliveira Pinto is from São Paulo, Brazil, and holds the world’s first musicological UNESCO Chair, the Chair of ‘Transcultural Music Studies’ at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar. Since 2025, he has also held the ‘Musical Heritage Chair’ at the Kronberg Academy.
Prof. de Oliveira Pinto has carried out collaborative cultural projects and music research in Brazil, where he has worked with indigenous groups, amongst others. He has also been active as a cultural researcher and producer in various countries in Africa, Europe and South-East Asia.
He first met the photographer Sebastião Salgado in 1998, when he organised an exhibition at the Brazilian Cultural Institute in Berlin, which he headed.
