Born in Berlin, Tobias Berndt began his musical education in the Dresden Kreuzchor. He studied with Hermann Christian Polster in Leipzig and continued his studies with Rudolf Piernay in Mannheim. His teachers also include Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Thomas Quasthoff, Wolfram Rieger, Norman Shetler and Irwin Gage. Awarded several scholarships, Tobias Berndt won the Das Lied – International Song Competition in Berlin, the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Pörtschach and the Cantilena Singing Competition in Bayreuth. He has also won prizes at the National Singing Competition in Berlin, the International Competition for the Art of Lied at the Hugo Wolf Academy in Stuttgart, the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the International Competition Franz Schubert and Modern Music in Graz and the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund.
As a concert singer, Tobias Berndt has established himself far beyond the country's borders. More recently, he has worked with conductors such as Hans Christoph Rademann, Philippe Herreweghe, Helmuth Rilling, Christoph Spering, Michael Sanderling, Andrey Boreyko, Teodor Currentzis, Joshard Daus, Enoch zu Guttenberg and Ludwig Güttler, and has sung concerts at the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonies, the Tonhalle in Zurich and Düsseldorf, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Herkulessaal in Munich. Tobias Berndt has also made guest appearances at major festivals such as the Prague Spring, the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu, the Musikfest Stuttgart and the Herrenchiemsee.
