Tobias Berndt

Born in Berlin, Tobias Berndt began his musical education in the Dresden Kreuzchor. He studied with Hermann Christian Polster in Leipzig and continued his training with Rudolf Piernay in Mannheim. His teachers also include Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Thomas Quasthoff, Wolfram Rieger, Norman Shetler and Irwin Gage.

The baritone has been the recipient of several scholarships and has won the International Song Competition “Das Lied” in Berlin, the International Johannes Brahms Competition in Poertschach, Austria, and the Cantilena Song Competition in Bayreuth. He has also won prizes at the Bundeswettbewerb Gesang Berlin, the Hugo Wolf Academy International Competition for Art Song in Stuttgart, the Mozarteum International Summer Academy in Salzburg, the International Chamber Music Competition "Franz Schubert and the music of the modern age" in Graz and the International Schubert Competition in Dortmund.

Tobias Berndt has established himself as a concert singer far beyond the borders of his home country. He has recently worked with conductors such as Hans-Christoph Rademann, Philippe Herreweghe, Helmuth Rilling, Christoph Spering, Michael Sanderling, Andrey Boreyko, Teodor Currentzis, Joshard Daus, Enoch zu Guttenberg and Ludwig Güttler, and has sung concerts in the Philharmonies in Berlin and Cologne, the Tonhallen in Zurich and Dusseldorf, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig and the Herkulessaal in Munich. Tobias Berndt has also performed at major festivals such as the Prague Spring Festival, the Festival de La Chaise-Dieu, the Musikfest Stuttgart and the Herrenchiemsee Festspiele.
