Many are familiar with Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition," but he was certainly not the only one who was inspired by paintings for his music. Anna Clyne followed suit and created a short, impressive piece based on a series of paintings by the artist Jock McFadyen. Impressive as well is Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3, especially the slow movement, which with its stretched tempo almost feels like a slow motion. Time also seems to endlessly stretch in Charles Ives' "Unanswered Question," as the "question" posed by the solo trumpet remains unanswered. The search becomes more urgent, but it remains unsuccessful. On the other hand, Samuel Barber took a rather classical approach to his symphony. Oriented towards late Romantic models, he created a symphony in a single movement that hardly leaves anyone untouched with its emotional depth.Anna Clyne
