About the Concert

Duration: approx. 1 hr without intermission

Beethoven's third piano concerto is more serious and charged with tension than many works of his time – even the dark key of C minor suggests this. The piano and orchestra engage with each other here less politely than in a spirited discussion, sometimes closely intertwined, sometimes clearly at odds. At the premiere, Beethoven himself played the solo part, although parts were not yet fully notated – he simply improvised. The slow second movement feels like a brief pause, almost detached from the rest of the proceedings. In the finale, the energy returns, yet the underlying tension remains palpable. Thus, the concerto stands at the threshold between classical form and very personal expression.

At our abgeFRACKt concerts, things are a bit different: The orchestra does not wear tails on stage. No one has to fear clapping at the wrong moment.
Anyone who wants to learn more about the music can download the free Wolfgang app onto their smartphone and receive live explanations of the work during the concert. Afterwards, we invite everyone to stay and enjoy the abgeFRACKt cocktail (also non-alcoholic), the house lemonade, a glass of wine or beer in the café "Tutti", to relax and chat with musicians from the orchestra.
