About the Concert

Anyone who thinks they have never heard this work before is surely mistaken: In particular, "The Dance of the Knights" from Prokofiev's famous ballet has made its way onto stages, as well as into films, series, commercials, and even video games. From Wednesday playing the piece on her cello at the beginning of the 2nd season, to The Simpsons, the theme tune of the BBC series The Apprentice, a Chanel commercial from 1990, to the video game Civilization V, and many more - "Romeo and Juliet" has been an inspiration in many places. It's no wonder, as Shakespeare's famous love drama has been "translated" into other art forms over the centuries: from musicals to operas to purely orchestral music. Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev achieved this in an outstanding way with his ballet music. After a brief initial failure, it is now considered one of the best musical adaptations of the story ever. This is clearly due to its quality! Not only ballet enthusiasts, but also concert audiences could not get enough of it - on one hand, the melting melodies, and on the other hand, the dynamic dances, sometimes wildly virtuosic, sometimes captivating with their powerful rhythms. Entertaining and exciting, Malte Arkona briefly introduces the work. Together with conductor Emmanuel Tjeknavorian and the orchestra, they play their favorite parts from the symphony: in a short time, you will understand why this masterpiece should be heard at least once in a lifetime and why it is considered one of the "Best of Classical Music." Afterward, you can enjoy the symphony in a short concert. Then, we would be happy to welcome you at the bar on the 1st floor, where host Malte Arkona will engage in a conversation with Emmanuel Tjeknavorian on a small stage and gladly answer any questions you may have!
