About the Concert
In the 19th century, one was considered a "true" composer if they wrote symphonies. Franz Schubert had composed several symphonies before his "Great" one, but they were either short or unfinished. He was known as a composer of songs who occasionally wrote something else. With his Symphony in C major (the "Great" one, as there is also a "Little" one), he wanted to change that perception. And he succeeded, big time! With a length of approximately one hour, it was already something special in his time, and musically it stands out from all the other symphonies of his era. The solemn tone of the horns at the beginning, the grand musical arcs and thrilling melodies, the sophisticated use of instruments, and the sudden dissonances make this work one of the most significant symphonies of the 19th century.
Malte Arkona briefly introduces the work at the beginning. Following the concert, you can join him and the conductor Miguel Sepúlveda for an artist talk in the foyer of the 1st floor.
In September 2024, the Portuguese conductor Miguel Sepúlveda was announced as the very first Sir Donald Runnicles Fellow of the Dresden Philharmonic, where for two seasons he will support the new Chief Conductor in his projects and conduct his own concerts. In June 2025, he will be one of six finalists of the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam. He has already conducted several well-known orchestras in Portugal and the UK, including the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Orchestra.
The presenter, actor and voice actor Malte Arkona is known to many viewers from television, but is also one of the most sought-after music educators in the German-speaking world. He has been a regular stage partner of the Dresden Philharmonic in this capacity for many years and has been presenting its new "Best of Classics" series, which he co-designed, since the 2024/25 season. He also directs video clips for the orchestra, in which he can also be seen himself.
That is the claim of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra stands for concerts at the highest artistic level, musical education for all ages and looking beyond the musical horizon. Guest performances on almost every continent and collaborations with guests from all over the world have established the reputation of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the international classical music world.
