Elves, love confusions, and enchanted forests - the just 17-year-old Felix Mendelssohn composed one of the most popular concert pieces ever with his music for Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Right at the beginning, one can hear a shimmering elf light in the strings... In contrast, the beginning of Grieg's Piano Concerto is almost powerful and definitely catchy. "Black bread" combined with "oysters and caviar," as the composer once said: in his work, he combined Norwegian folk music with art music, creating musical colors of his homeland. Also vivid is the music of Edward Elgar in his "Falstaff" study. Those who know the corpulent, self-important womanizer from theater or opera can see him musically here. Elgar himself considered this portrait in tones to be his best work ever, but to this day, it is (much too) rarely heard on the concert stage.Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy
