About the Concert

More famous than Beethoven's Ninth? Yes, in the 19th century, the use of choir in Mendelssohn's "Lobgesang" was more popular than the "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's last symphony. To this day, "The night is past, but the day is at hand" is considered one of the most beautiful romantic choral pieces ever. But comparisons are usually flawed, and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy did not need to outdo Beethoven. His work, which he created in 1840 for the anniversary of "400 years of the invention of the printing press" for the book city of Leipzig, has its own musical qualities and combines tradition and innovation in a special way. The two other works that the Dresdner Kreuzchor and Dresdner Philharmonie will perform together on this evening also give the choir, soloists, and orchestra their own unique tasks. An opportunity for both to showcase their special qualities.

Biographies

Kreuzkantor Martin Lehmann

Since the fall of 2022, Martin Lehmann has been the 29th Kreuzkantor, making him the incumbent of one of the most prestigious posts in Protestant church music. He was a member of the Crucians himself during his childhood and youth, and later studied choral and orchestral conducting in Dresden. He gained important experience during his studies as an assistant to Hans-Christoph Rademann at the Dresden Chamber Choir. After working in Leipzig and Wuppertal, he took over the Windsbacher Knabenchor for ten years in 2012.

Julia Kleiter

The soprano Julia Kleiter, originally from Limburg, studied with Prof. William Workmann in Hamburg and Prof. Klesie Kelly-Moog in Cologne. She made her debut in 2004 at the Opéra
Bastille in Paris as Pamina – a role she went on to perform in numerous productions over the years at leading houses such as Madrid, Zurich, the Metropolitan Opera in New York,
Munich, and the Salzburg Festival, under conductors including Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Marc Minkowski, Claudio Abbado, and Philippe Jordan. She has built a wide-ranging opera and concert repertoire through collaborations with renowned conductors such as Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Ivor
Bolton, René Jacobs, and Fabio Luisi.

Marie Henriette Reinhold

Leipzig-born mezzo-soprano Marie Henriette Reinhold has performed in numerous concert halls and major churches in Germany and other European countries since graduating with honours in 2020. She has been performing at the Bayreuth Festival since 2019, where she will sing one of Klingsor's Flowermaidens and the Voice from Above in "Parsifal" as well as Floßhilde in "Der Ring" in the anniversary year 2026. She is also highly successful in the baroque repertoire, in new music and in the lied repertoire.

Mauro Peter

Swiss tenor Mauro Peter was born in Lucerne and completed his studies at the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Munich. In 2012 he won both first prize and the audience prize at the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau and made his highly acclaimed recital debut at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg with Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin. He has since appeared as a regular guest at the festival and in leading concert halls and opera houses internationally such as Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie, Brucknerhaus Linz, HET Concertgebouw, at the Canadian Opera Company, Bavarian State Opera, Opéra de Lyon, Opéra national de Paris, the Royal Opera House in London, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Teatro Real in Madrid, Theater an der Wien, Zurich Opera House and the Salzburg Festival.

Dresdner Kreuzchor

The Dresden Kreuzchor is one of the oldest and most famous boys' choirs in the world. Even after more than 800 years, one of its most important tasks is to sing in the liturgical services of the Kreuzkirche on Dresden's Altmarkt, where it performs in vespers and church services and regularly gives concerts with outstanding works of sacred music. In addition, the Kruzianer, who have been singing under the direction of Martin Lehmann since 2022, regularly go on tours at home and abroad as cultural ambassadors for Dresden.
