"Of a Spring Morning"
Francis Poulenc
Concerto for Organ, Strings, and Timpani
Carl Nielsen
Symphony No. 5
Our concert hall organ, the "orchestra in one instrument," is at the center of Francis Poulenc's Organ Concerto - a work full of contrasts. Sometimes deeply serious, almost sacred, then surprisingly playful, Poulenc combines tradition and modernity in a fascinating way. The soloist of the evening, Anna Lapwood, one of the most exciting organists of her generation, impresses with her virtuosity and her ability to engage people with classical music.
The Fifth Symphony of the great Dane Carl Nielsen is considered a jewel of symphonic literature. Premiered in 1922, it is perhaps the boldest creation of the always original composer. Particularly impressive is the "battle" between the orchestra and a rebellious little drum, creating gripping tension. Throughout the symphony, beautiful, soothing passages are heard, abruptly interrupted by stirring "evil" escalations - an exciting rollercoaster of emotions!
