About the Concert

He sensed it: the Second World War would soon break out. Benjamin Britten couldn't bear to stay in England, so he boarded a ship to Canada. The difficulty of this decision for him as a committed pacifist can also be heard in his music. During the voyage, he wrote his Violin Concerto in D minor, which will be performed by Augustin Hadelich in our concert. Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony also reflects this war, although composed on the other side, in Stalin's Soviet Union. For Shostakovich, it was a balancing act: he did not want to write optimistic music, but it also could not be too tragic. The result is a work that reflects these contradictions. Michael Sanderling is considered one of the leading Shostakovich experts among the conductors of our time. He experienced the close friendship between his father and the composer as a child...

Michael Sanderling

Michael Sanderling has been Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra since 2021. The appointment comes after many years of successful collaboration and with the common goal of further developing the orchestra in the direction of late Romantic repertoire such as Bruckner, Mahler and Strauss.

Augustin Hadelich

Artist in Residence

Augustin Hadelich has established himself as one of the great violinists of his generation and performs with all the major orchestras in North America, Europe and the Far East, whereby his phenomenal reputation always precedes the German-American. The GRAMMY winner has also recorded numerous works for CD, in recent years as an exclusive artist of Warner Classics. As Artist in Residence, he will perform several programs with the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the 2024/25 season.
