About the Concert
Benjamin Britten anticipated that the Second World War would break out soon. He couldn't stay in England and boarded a ship to Canada. One can hear in his music how unbearable this must have been for him as a committed pacifist. During the voyage, he composed his Violin Concerto in D minor, which will be performed by Augustin Hadelich in our concert. Dmitri Shostakovich's Eighth Symphony also reflects this war, although composed on the other side, in Stalin's Soviet Union. For Shostakovich, it was a balancing act: he didn't want to write optimistic music, but it couldn't be tragic either. The result is a work that mirrors these contradictions. Michael Sanderling is considered one of the leading Shostakovich experts among today's conductors. He experienced his father's close friendship with the composer as a child.

JUNE 13: Concert as part of the Dresden Music Festival.
Michael Sanderling began his career as a cellist, but has devoted himself primarily to conducting since 2001. Since 2021, he has been the Chief Conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, with which he has already toured Germany, Asia and South America. From 2011 to 2019, he was Chief Conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic. He is professor of violincello at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and passionately committed to many promotion projects for young musicians.
With his ravishing tone, phenomenal technique and deeply felt interpretations, violinist Augustin Hadelich plays concerts in major halls around the world. After performing in the USA, in Australia and New Zealand in summer 2024, he will embark on a major tour of Asia in summer 2025. He is the Dresden Philharmonic's Artist in Residence for the 2024/25 season. Further appearances will take him to the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras and the Concertgebouworkest among others.
That is the claim of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra stands for concerts at the highest artistic level, musical education for all ages and looking beyond the musical horizon. Guest performances on almost every continent and collaborations with guests from all over the world have established the reputation of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the international classical music world.
