Dietrich Schlät

in the orchestra since 1992

Born in Dresden in 1969, Dietrich Schlät received his first recorder lessons at the age of 5. This was followed at the age of 10 by French horn lessons at the Dresden District Music School with Heinz Wagner. He attended the Special School of Music in Dresden and performed for the first time as a soloist in concerts with orchestra. 1986 -1992 he studied orchestral music at the Dresden University of Music with Prof. Lothar Böhm. Already in his 2nd year Dietrich Schlät became a substitute of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. In the spring and summer of 1989 he participated in the "Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra" under Claudio Abbado. He completed postgraduate studies with the soloist exam and performed on the solo horn in orchestras in and around Dresden. In 1992 Dietrich Schlät was engaged as principal horn of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1996 he has held the position of 2nd horn. Various chamber music activities in different formations are documented in radio, studio and CD recordings, e.g. with the Dresden Wind Quintet, the Philharmonic Horn Quartet and "Kultblech Dresden". As a guest, his activities have taken him to the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the MDR Symphony Orchestra, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Staatskapelle Weimar and regularly to the Ensemble Frauenkirche Dresden. His special interest in the methodical and musical fundamentals of horn playing and their teaching to young people has connected him closely with the Heinrich Schütz Conservatory Dresden in a teaching position since 2008.
