Gergely Madaras

Hungarian conductor Gergely Madaras was named 2025 "Conductor of the Year" at the Bartók Radio Awards. He served as Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège from 2019 to 2025 where his successful tenure was recently marked by him being named an Honorary Citizen of the city.

 

His 2025/26 season includes high-profile symphonic debuts at the Dresden Philharmonic, NDR Elbphilharmonie, Dresden Staatskapelle, Palau de la Música Valencia, Hong Kong Philharmonic, in Mulhouse, Tampere, Trondheim, and also with Welsh National Opera ("Tosca"). He returns to the NHK Symphony Orchestra, the Luxembourg, Oslo, Turku and Warsaw Philharmonics, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and BBCNOW as well as Hungarian State Opera and conducts a special project with Hungarian Radio Symphony celebrating the 100th birthday of György Kurtág.

 

Recent symphonic highlights include performances with the Oslo Philharmonic, Budapest Festival Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, The Hallé Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Jewish World Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, and São Paulo State Symphony. He also appeared with Joyce DiDonato and Il pomo d’oro at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam as part of the "EDEN" tour.

 

Gergely Madaras was the inaugural Sir Charles Mackerras Fellow at the English National Opera. In recent seasons he has conducted critically acclaimed productions at the Dutch National Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Genève as well as La Monnaie Brussels and the Hungarian State Opera.
