The Young Symphony Orchestra Dresden at the Saxon State Grammar School for Music Carl Maria von Weber claims a permanent place in Dresden's musical life with its concerts. As an essential part of musical training, it offers all orchestral instrumentalists a basis for artistic practice and communication under the guidance of experienced musicians from the Staatskapelle Dresden and the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra.
The ensemble's permanent conductors have included Rudolf Neuhaus, Klaus-Dieter Stephan, Stefan Bilz, Lothar Seyfarth, Tilo Schmalenberg and Wolfgang Behrend. The young musicians have welcomed Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Michael Sanderling and Wladimir Jurowski as special guests. The orchestra currently performs regularly with conductors Ulrich Kern, Eckehard Stier and Bruno Borralhinho. The Junge Sinfonieorchester Dresden has won first prize at the German Orchestra Competition several times.
The ensemble has taken part in events as part of the Dresden Music Festival and realised musical collaborations with European partner schools, including joint concerts with the Mozart Choir Linz at the Brucknerhaus, with the orchestra of the Musikgymnasium Berlin at the Choriner Musiksommer and with the Atheneum Kamerorkest from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the concert hall of the Dresden University of Music and Performing Arts. In March 2018, the Junge Sinfonieorchester Dresden made its debut in the new concert hall of Dresden's Kulturpalast.
