Michał Sławecki

Polish countertenor Michał Sławecki is a graduate of the Vocal Department at the Fryderyk Chopin Music University in Warsaw under the tutelage of Professor Artur Stefanowicz. While still being a student, Michał Sławecki made his debut at the Castle Opera in Szczecin as Prince Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus". His broad repertoire covers various periods, from baroque to modern compositions. He appeared on stage performing the parts of: the First Witch in "Dido and Aeneas" by H. Purcell, Sesto in "Giulio Cesare in Egitto" by G. F. Handel, Nerone in "L’incoronazione di Poppea" by C. Monteverdi, Nerone in "Agrippina" by G. F. Handel, the title role in "Rinaldo" by G.F. Handel, Cherubino in "Le nozze di Figaro" by W. A. Mozart, Orfeo in "Orfeo ed Euridice" by Ch. W. Gluck, the title role in "Voyager" by S. Kupczak, Andy in "Lost Highway" by O. Neuwirth, Jezus in "Cud niedokonany" (An unfinished miracle) by S. Kupczak, Koń-Marynarz (Horse-Sailor) in "Człowiek z Manufaktury" (The Man from the factory) by R. Janiak, and Spirit in "Only the Sound Remains" by K. Saariaho.

Michał Sławecki’s debuts in the years 2017-2019 included the parts of Stefano in Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette" at the Silesian Opera in Bytom, Koń-Marynarz (Horse-Sailor) at the Grand Theatre in Łódź in the world premiere of the opera "Człowiek z Manufaktury" composed by Rafał Janiak, the winner of the International Opera Composition Competition, Cherubino in a new production of "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Warsaw Chamber Opera, and the new production of "Le nozze di Figaro" at the Grand Theatre in Łódź.

In the 2019/20 season the artist appeared in the title role in a world premiere of Karol Nepelski’s "Birdy" at the Tête à Tête Opera Festival in London and returned to the parts of Nerone in "Agrippina" at the Festival of Baroque Operas Dramma per musica in Warsaw, Stefano at the Silesian Opera in Bytom and Prince Orlofsky at the Castle Opera in Szczecin.

His engagements in the 2020/21 season included debuts as Uranio in a concert version of N. Porpora’s "Filandro" at the Bydgoszcz Baroque Scene Festival and the countertenor part in Kaija Saariaho’s opera "Only the Sound Remains" at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Theatre – a production which was also presented at La Biennale di Venezia in September 2021 and at Theatre Maillon de Strasbourg in 2022.

Michał Sławecki is known for his contemporary music interpretations, and he cooperates with prominent Polish composers: Paweł Mykietyn, Agata Zubel, Wojciech Błażejczyk, Rafał Ryterski, Bartek Chajdecki, Maciej Zieliński and Andrzej Zarycki amongst others.

He has sung at such venues as the National Philharmonic in Warsaw, Philharmonics in Szczecin, Gdańsk and Bydgoszcz, the Silesian Opera in Bytom, the Polish National Opera, the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz, the Castle Opera in Szczecin, the Teatru Manoel in Malta, the Maillon – Théâtre de Strasbourg, and Teatro Mailbran Venice, and he performed with concert repertoire in Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Austria, South Africa, Serbia and Kazakhstan. His latest engagements include concerts with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra ("Totentanz" by Ryterski), the double role debut as Raphael and Death in "Raj Utracony" (Paradise Lost) by Krzysztof Penderecki at the Teatr Wielki Łodzi in an awarded production by Michał Znaniecki, and concerts with the Sinfonietta Cracovia and the Baroque Collegium 1685 conducted by Agnieszka Żarska.

In November 2024 he portrayed Witold Gombrowicz in the new opera "History" by Michał Dobrzynski at Polska Opera Krolewska in Warsaw, commissioned for the Year of Gombrowicz Celebration, announced by the Senate of the Republic of Poland. His upcoming engagements include Stefano in "Roméo et Juliette" at the Silesian Opera in Bytom, to which he will further return with his acclaimed Prince Orlofsky in "Die Fledermaus", furthermore "Via Crucis" by Paweł Łukaszewski at Filharmonia Łodzka, and his triple debut with the Berner Symphonieorchester, the Münchner Philharmoniker and the Dresden Philharmonie, performing the solo of Henryk Mikołaj Górecki's Symphony No. 3 ("Symphony of Sorrowful Songs") under the baton of Krzysztof Urbański.

During his prestigious career he collaborated with several contemporary artists and movie directors. In 2024 he sang in the art performance "Keeping Flowers Alive" by Katarzyna Krakowiak in Tokyo. He recorded the soundtrack by BAASCH for the Netflix movie "Lipstick on the glass" by Kuba Czekaj. He performed in "Dance Mom", a creation of the dancer and choreographer Wojciech Grudziński. He established a long collaboration with Wojciech Urbański, performing in his projects such as "The Art and Sound of Everdome" and recently " Lutosławski/Szymanowski Reinterpreted". His recording of "Gaude" (a music production by Konrad Kucz and Mateusz Kwiatkowski) has been awarded as "Best Album of 2024" by the renowned magazine Hi-Fi i Muzyka. Soon he will appear with a cameo performance in the movie "Chopin, Chopin!” that will be released in Autumn 2025.
