Răzvan Popescu was born in Bucharest (Romania) in 1987. At the age of seven, he began his training at the local music high school, first as a violinist, before switching to the double bass at the age of 16.
From 2006 to 2012, he studied at the Bucharest State Academy of Music in the double bass class of Stefan Thomasz and completed his master's degree in 2015 at the Nuremberg Academy of Music with Dorin Marc.
He completed master classes with Botond Kostyak, Dorin Marc, Catalin Rotaru and Božo Paradžik, won several prizes at double bass competitions in Romania and in 2014 was awarded second prize, the audience prize and a special prize at the VIII. International Sperger Competition for double bass in Andernach.
As a soloist, he has performed with the Romanian Youth Orchestra and the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, among others.
After positions as deputy principal double bass at the Staatstheater Nürnberg (2014/15) and at the Staatskapelle Dresden (2015/16), he has been coordinated principal double bass at the Dresden Philharmonic since the 2016/17 season.
