About the Concert

Many people are familiar with the accordion, especially in folk music - but in 2026, it will finally receive the attention it deserves as the Instrument of the Year, even in the concert hall. And yes: it can do much more than just be loud! Composer Dobrinka Tabakova calls it a "machine with a soul" - an instrument made up of many small mechanical parts that still sounds like a living breath. In her accordion concerto "Sublime Dreams of Living Machines," she showcases this exact blend of emotion, surprising sounds, and contemplation on humanity and technology. Also, the opera "The Cunning Little Vixen" by Czech composer Leoš Janáček is more surprising than its title suggests. It is not a cute animal fairy tale, but rather a story about nature, freedom, and the cycle of life. The orchestra serves as the real engine of the plot and a poetic commentator on the events: it comments on the unspoken desires of humans as well as the energy, freedom, and vulnerability of animals.
