About the Concert

For many, it plays in the background, but Mozart loved the viola and appreciated its sonorous sound. When he himself made chamber music, he often reached for the larger sister of the violin. In his Sinfonia concertante in E-flat major, he lets both instruments truly shine. Some refer to it as the "perfectly unfinished" – Schubert's perhaps most famous symphony is indeed a masterpiece. Almost tragically dark at the beginning, the second movement spreads an almost hymnal bliss. Why Schubert did not finish the symphony is a great mystery of music history. But perhaps one should simply listen to it for what it is: one of the most emotionally gripping works of musical Romanticism.
