About the Concert

Duration: approx. 1 hr without intermission

Beethoven's third piano concerto is more serious and tension-filled than many works of his time - the dark key of C minor already hints at this. The piano and orchestra here encounter each other less politely and more discussion-friendly, sometimes closely connected, sometimes clearly opposed to each other. At the premiere, Beethoven himself played the solo part, even though parts were not fully notated - he simply improvised. The slow second movement feels like a brief pause, almost detached from the rest of the action. In the finale, the energy returns, but the underlying tension remains palpable. Thus, the concerto stands at the threshold between classical form and very personal expression.
