Anton Bruckner's Third Symphony is not a work for quick effects, but unfolds in large, expansive arcs. The composer was an organist, and so the music sometimes sounds as if a huge orchestra is being used like an oversized organ, especially with the powerful sound of the brass instruments. During the first performance, many audience members left the concert hall, which is hardly imaginable today. The long pauses and crescendos are not moments of stagnation, but deliberately placed moments of tension. It is best to listen to this work without haste and let the sound simply take effect.Anton Bruckner
